By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- PRIME Minister Dr. Terrance Drew has confirmed that none of the Federation’s students were injured in the recent 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck Taiwan, claiming at least 9 lives.

"I know it's after 3 in the morning, but I had to call our Ambassador to Taiwan, HE Donya Francis, to inquire about our citizens there. He reported that all are well," Dr. Drew wrote on social media.

The Embassy of Taiwan in St. Kitts also confirmed, "All nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis currently in Taiwan are safe and accounted for following the earthquake in Eastern Taiwan."

The island was rocked by the earthquake in the early hours of Wednesday, overnight in the Federation, leaving almost 1000 injured and 100 trapped as rescue efforts continue.

This 7.5 magnitude quake, recorded on the Richter scale, is the strongest the island has faced in the last 25 years. Reports from Taipei indicate that five of the nine deaths were hikers who perished due to rockfalls.

According to the US Geological Survey, the epicenter of the earthquake was located approximately 11 miles south of Hualien city.
