BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — POLICE are facing a surge in gun violence over the past several days, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
The most recent incident occurred Thursday in the Newtown area, leaving one person dead. The Public Relations Department released a statement confirming that "a shooting incident occurred at John Street, Newtown, shortly before 2:00 p.m., resulting in one fatality."
This incident comes less than 24 hours after 18-year-old Crisbel Rivera, a resident of the same location, was shot and killed.
According to a police statement, gunfire erupted between 8:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. in the area. Upon arrival, officers found Rivera, a Dominican national residing at Carty Alley, Newtown, lying motionless with multiple gunshot wounds.
Preliminary investigations suggest Rivera was approached by an armed assailant who fired multiple shots.
Dr. Terrance Drew, Minister of National Security and Prime Minister, reassured the public that he has been in contact with the Commissioner of Police, the Commander of the military, and the National Security Advisor to assess the situation and develop strategies for ensuring citizens' safety and national security.
"I want to reassure the public that the national security of St. Kitts and Nevis remains strong, and these random incidents are being addressed," Dr. Drew stated on his social media platform.
He emphasized the government's commitment to investing heavily in national security, stating, "The safety of our citizens is our top priority."
Dr. Drew also announced the imminent establishment of a citizen security secretariat, which is in its final stages of development.
