Charlestown Nevis (February 24, 2006) Newly appointed Organisation of American States (OAS) Director, Mr. Starret Greene who was on his first official visit to Nevis, met and held discussions on Friday with Premier of Nevis, the Hon. Mr. Vance Amory, at the Administration Building at Bath Plain.
The Antiguan born Director, whose office is based in Basseterre, also paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Governor General, His Hon. Mr. Eustace John and Deputy Premier, the Hon Mr. Malcolm Guishard in his capacity as Leader of the Opposition in the Federal Parliament.
Speaking to the Government Information Services, Mr. Greene noted that his discussions with the officials in the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) would seek to improve the existing relationship with the Organisation and the Administration.
"I'll be discussing with government officials here in the Nevis Island Administration, the efforts of the OAS on the island," he said. "We are engaged in several technical cooperation activities. Activities aimed at restoring and improving delivery of energy. We are also talking about the distribution of land, ensuring that the lands that are here on the island are properly developed."
Director Greene observed that the OAS office was engaged in a very important project geared towards total development for the Federation. "We have a project by the name of the Physical Development Plan. That's a very important project and what we'll be looking at in that project, is to ensure that lands for commercial, lands for residential, lands set aside for tourism, agriculture or even preservation are properly designated. That will help the Nevis Island Administration in the planning of the land, planning of development so that there is an orderly development of the land in the island of Nevis," he said.
The Organisation of American States has been active in the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis since 1985 and has played a key role in the political, economic, social and cultural development of the Federation.
