CXC addresses CAPE Examination concerns

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- THE Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has addressed concerns regarding the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) Chemistry Unit 2.

In a media statement issued on Friday, May 24, the regional examination body reassured stakeholders about the integrity of the CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 Paper 02 examination conducted on May 9, 2024, across the region.

Concerns had been raised that the examination questions focused on material from the CAPE Chemistry Unit 1 syllabus instead of the CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 syllabus.

In response to the concerns, CXC stated, “Mindful of the anxiety among candidates and parents arising from these concerns, CXC immediately launched an investigation into this matter. These investigations have determined that the questions on the CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 Paper 02 examination, were indeed designed for candidates to demonstrate knowledge of material covered by the CAPE Chemistry Unit 2 syllabus.”

CXC emphasized that it continues to listen to concerns by engaging with stakeholders and stands by its robust quality assurance system. This system includes qualified professionals at all stages of the examination development process, ensuring the efficacy of the examinations. Additionally, the system allows for adjustments during the marking and grading process to ensure that candidates are not negatively affected by circumstances beyond their control.

The examination body further stated that maintaining the integrity of CXC’s assessments is critical for candidates and the value of their qualifications. This commitment aligns with CXC's mission to ‘develop the human capital of our Caribbean people through partnerships for global competitiveness.’
