Armed men rob McKnight Supermarket

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Audacious armed bandits successfully executed their mid-day plan of robbery at a McKnight supermarket Friday (Dec. 11) which left the owner of the business nursing head injuries.

A press release issued by the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force’s Press and Public Relations Office explains that members of the Special Services and detectives of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) made prompt response to the scene after a 12:17 p.m. report was placed.

According to their reports, the release added, the masked men, one armed with a pistol and the other with a knife, entered the Best Grocery Supermarket – located on the corner of Central Street and Lower Shaw Avenue - and demanded money from the owner.

His resistance to this act, which has been described by the police as “brave”, resulted in him sustaining a wound on his head. Unconfirmed reports reaching this media house suggest that the assailant, who was carrying the gun, struck the owner on his head with it, thus causing the injury.

“The assailants then made their escape with the loot up Shaw Avenue,” the release stated, while the wounded man was transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where he was treated at the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department and discharged.

The police have issued an appeal to “victims of robbery” to exercise caution when these unfortunate acts are taking place.

“We are appealing to all who unfortunately become the victim of a robbery to be very careful not to offer unnecessary resistance and to make sure if they intend to resist such a violent crime, that they calculate all the risk associated before they do so. It is always better to let go of money or property than to risk losing one’s life in trying to defend them.”

Investigations into the incident are ongoing. However, persons having information relative to this robbery are asked to contact the CID at 465-2241 ext. 230 and forward such information. Information given will be treated with the strictest confidence and can be divulged on condition of anonymity.
