Richards urges all to return to the Party under new leadership

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — FORMER Leader of the People’s Action Movement (PAM), Shawn Richards, has called on his party to unite behind the new leadership as they seek to chart a new course for the political establishment.

In his final address as the party leader, Richards called for all to return and give the new executive a chance, while cautioning the leaders to be mindful of whom they seek partnership.

“My final words of advice to the new leadership and the membership generally, let us continue to put country above self.  Let us continue to put people first. Let us choose our friends wisely and let us avoid any type of friendship that cannot be trusted. Therefore, let us not repeat the mistakes of the past,” Richards told the Party’s Convention yesterday (Jun.9)

He was one of several members of the former coalition Team Unity Administration that eventually crumbled . The party has now sought to rebuild as Richards announced that he will not seek re-election.

Despite not seeking re-election, the political leader assured that he remains committed to the people of the country and his constituency, as the rebuilding efforts continue.

“Members and friends, our journey must continue. Let us remain united in our mission, inspired by our shared vision, and committed to building a better and brighter future for all. Thank you for the privilege of serving as your leader,” Richards said.

“I decided not to seek re-election as political leader simply because I think it is time for a fresh start. Time for a new vision, driven by your voice and steadied by your commitment. In PAM, our leaders do not die in their boots, clinging on to power.”

Natasha Grey, an attorney-at-law, was elected as the new political leader of the party, receiving the blessing of the former leader, who noted that she is a “potential Prime Minister.”

He admonished all to rally behind the first female leader as the party seeks to move forward.

“I urge each member to clap hands around our incoming leader, Mistress Natasha Brooks, as she begins the task of rebuilding the party and readying the various arms and organs in the political battle to rescue this country from an administration that promised better but has fast become a great disappointment, even to its own members. To the new executive members, especially those being elevated for the very first time, I admonish you to be active and productive and to work united as a team led for the first time by a woman, a mother, a wife, a lawyer, but more importantly, a potential Prime Minister,” urged Richards.

Meanwhile, he urged all to continue “to work together with the same vigor and dedication” for the party.
