Boston/June 13, 2023/CMM Inc. — The Authentic Caribbean Foundation (ACF) and Generation Grenada Foundation (GGF) are holding a virtual launch event on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 10:00 am, to announce the inaugural staging of the Caribbean Disability Conference. The conference, staged under the theme, "Community Access, Empowerment, and Inclusion," is scheduled for October 9 through 13, 2024, at the Radisson Grenada Beach Resort, St. George, Grenada.

Central to the conference agenda is a global study commissioned by UNICEF which speaks to the need for youth with disabilities to receive supportive program designs. The Authentic Caribbean Foundation and its partners will interrogate the study's findings, as it seeks to join the global mission by bringing the Caribbean current. Its goal is to meet the needs of persons in the region who live with disabilities. There will be deliberations on advocacy and awareness, education, current acts and laws around disability, and barriers to inclusion.

ACF and GGF note that around 15% of the world’s population, or an estimated 1 billion people live with disabilities and are the world’s largest minority. It is of concern to the group that these persons lack adequate access to health care, rehabilitation, or other specialized support services. These glaring deficiencies have motivated the group to initiate programs to improve the lives of persons with disabilities across the region. In 2023, ACF, in partnership with GGF, staged the Futuristic Learning Through Youth Involvement program, aimed at equipping youth with coding prowess, sparking a revolution in educational engagement. Youth with disabilities were included in the workshop series. Additionally, ACF, through its medical equipment supply program, has over the years tried to bridge the gap by donating much-needed supplies to families across the Caribbean.

"I am overjoyed to see young people with disabilities being included in programs that promote their holistic advancement and self-improvement," says Andrew Sharpe, Founder and CEO of ACF. "This conference will elevate and inspire our Caribbean community to attain the sustainable development goal of inclusion."

Facilitators representing community groups, regional government agencies, international advocacy groups, institutions, field experts, and educators are expected at the conference. As part of its commitment to lasting impact, a comprehensive white paper will be developed and presented to Caricom and regional governments at the end of the conference. This document will serve as a valuable resource, offering insights and recommendations to support the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals outlined by the United Nations.
