“One More Day for Carnival,” says Bary Cranstoun

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – BARY CRANSTOUN is asking for one more day for Carnival to jump and prance and get on bad in a song he has released for the 2009/2010 Carnival celebrations.

The song is plainly titled ‘One More Day for Carnival’ and its lyrics speaks to just that. Cranstoun told SKNVibes in an exclusive interview that the reason for the song was the simple fact that every year following Carnival people are left wanting more.

“They have about a week to celebrate the major Carnival celebrations.

They start partying, getting into the groove and feeling good about partying. A lot of people from overseas come in and want to spend a lot of time partying, and before you know it, Carnival is done. New Years come and it’s time to go back to work.

“Everyone is feeling like they wish they had another day for Carnival. So, seeing that it is such a common thing for people every year, I felt that it was appropriate to ask in a song,” he said.

Cranstoun has been contributing to Carnival for a number of years and recounted his first year performing and releasing music.

In 1985 he released his first album called ‘Happy Party Mix’, featuring four songs with ‘Wukup’ being the most popular on that album. He has also released ‘Foot Bottom’, ‘Dutty Foot’, ‘Touch Somebody’, ‘Wrample up’, ‘Hi-Tech Jam Session’ which he did with local calypsonian Contender, ‘Drinking Posse’ and also his most recent tune, ‘Nothing for me’.

He said that with his tune, ‘Touch Somebody’, he came in second for the Road March title.

“Once I have life, spirit and time to contribute (to Carnival) I will. Everyone goes through stuff and you find that at different times you’d have to sacrifice something for something else. But as long as the time is right I will make my contribution,” he said.

His love for music started when he was a little boy attending music school with Mr. Bridgewater of the then Police Band. “Then I went to the Defence Force Band. I use to play in the Horn Section (trumpet, cornet, trombone, bass, tuber and euphonium). Ever since then the love for music stayed with me, not knowing I had the talent for writing but I found myself writing songs and recording them,” he said.

'One More Day for Carnival' was recorded at Platinum Productions with Jeffery Brooks.

Cranstoun said that he is planning to go on the road this year with his song. “We gonna leave from Bary’s at Bird Rock and we’re going to have a J‘Ouvert party on the eve of J ‘Ouvert, and early morning we will be down on the road,” he said.

He extended gratitude to all those who so far have supported him and his music.

“I want to thank the people for supporting, and once I’m alive I will try my best to have music out there for their ears,” he said. For copies of Cranstoun’s CD for the 2009/2010 Carnival celebrations, persons can contact him at 765-9281.
