Welsh voices concern over Labour Party’s election ploy

Bernard Welsh
PAM Secretariat

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, December 14th 2009 (PAM Secretariat) - Constituency Three Representative of the People’s Action Movement (PAM), Bernard Welsh has express grave concern in the manner in which the Labour Party has been conducting its election campaign. He stressed that there is a deliberate plot to stop him in his attempts to publicize the many atrocities being committed by government, especially in the Public Works and Utilities Ministry.

Welsh said that the recent verbal and physical attacks on his colleagues and his wife demonstrate the desperate attempt of the Labour Party to remain in office by competing in an unfair manner. He has however called on representatives of that party to be more responsible and mature, noting that at the end of the day the interest of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis should be foremost in the minds of all politicians.

“Let us compete in the best interest of the people of this Federation and not for any personal desire, but rather to alleviate the challenges and difficulties being faced by the public so that they can enjoy a better standard of living. I therefore urge all to commit themselves to conducting themselves in a more professional manner,” he said.

Welsh pointed out that there are evidence which suggest that the Labour Party is using “clandestine” methods to remain in office, but he insists that PAM would be victorious when the “dust” would have settled.

Welsh said that he finds it very worrying that Marcella Liburd, who is competing in Constituency Two, has never sought to publicly correct her colleagues for some of the unprofessional and disrespectful statements they made against his wife and women in general. “How can she claim to have the women of the Federation interest at heart when she doesn’t raise a finger in objection to how her colleagues describes women and their distasteful comments made against my wife,” Welsh asked.

“There can only be one explanation, and that is she is not genuine about her comments, as she claims about putting families first, and she should therefore be rejected by the voters. And while they continue to boast about winning, it is important for them to take a serious look at what is happening and how people are suffering, as people will certainly vote for change,” he added.

Welsh noted that the Labour Party is not serious about conducting its campaign without the instillation of fear and intimidating tactics, stressing that this strategy forms part of their scheme in winning the upcoming elections. He however stated that Labour’s strategy would not work and pointed to what recently occurred in Grenada, St. Lucia, Montserrat and, some years back, in Antigua and Barbuda.

Asked if he intends to quit the election race due to what occurred to his wife, Welsh said, “No, there is nothing that they can do to stop me once I am alive, as only God and my leader can stop me from running this race. I am steadfast in and committed to representing the people of Constituency Three, as they have said over and over that they need change and want responsible and nature representation in this constituency and my wife and family remain very supportive to the cause,” he declared.
