BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- Following a weekend marred by two fatal shooting incidents, Commissioner of Police James Sutton has spoken out, emphasizing the continued commitment to public safety and security.
In a message to the nation, Sutton reassured the community, stating, "the safety and well-being of everyone in our community" remains important.
The incidents in question occurred on Friday night at approximately 8:20 p.m., when 25-year-old Leshan Henry of Nevis Street was fatally shot along the same road. The following day, Akeem Archibald was shot outside his home while on a motorcycle in Conaree Village.
While investigations into both incidents are ongoing, the recent spike in crime and violence across the Federation has raised significant concerns. According to media reports, there have been 18 homicides recorded in the Federation this year.
Addressing these issues, Sutton emphasized the urgent need for collective action to address crime and violence within neighborhoods.
“We recognize that true safety and security are achieved not just through law enforcement but also through strong, collaborative relationships between the Police and the Community. It is with this spirit that I am reaching out to you today,” Suttan affirmed.
He urged citizens and residents to:
1. Stay vigilant and report suspicious activity.
2. Secure their property effectively.
3. Participate in community watch programs.
4. Engage youth positively in community activities.
5. Stay informed about local developments and safety measures.
In addition to the recent homicides, there have been reports of robberies targeting supermarkets owned by Asian migrants and an armed attack on a businessman in Nevis while he was paying his staff.
