BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — The police have announced that Denzil Stevens and Michael Saunders have both been convicted for the robbery of a Chinese supermarket located on Island Main Road in Camps.

The robbery occurred on December 6, 2019, at approximately 4:50 p.m., when two masked and armed men entered the Island Food Supermarket, situated on the northern side of Island Main Road, and demanded money from a cashier.

The assailants were reportedly armed with what appeared to be firearms and made off with an undisclosed sum of cash from the register.

At the time, there were reports that one of the alleged perpetrators was an Army personnel.

In a recent court update, police stated that Stevens and Saunders appeared before High Court Judge His Lordship Justice Iain Morley KC. On Friday, February 23, 2024, Stevens was arraigned and pleaded not guilty to the robbery charge. The trial began on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, and on Friday, May 24, 2024, the jury returned a guilty verdict. As a result, on Thursday, July 25, 2024, Stevens was sentenced to 17 years in prison, with time served on remand counted towards his sentence.

Meanwhile, Saunders initially pleaded not guilty to the robbery charge. However, after the charge was re-read on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, he changed his plea to guilty.

On Thursday, July 25, 2024, Saunders was sentenced to 9 years in prison, with time served on remand counted towards his sentence.
