BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — POLICE have released details about a shooting incident that occurred last evening (Aug. 10), which resulted in one fatality and has raised concerns among residents about the recent spate of homicides.
At approximately 7:25 p.m., officers from the Charlestown Police Station responded to reports of gunshots in the Craddock Road area. Upon arrival, they found Daurren Williams, 43, dead in the back seat of a vehicle, with multiple gunshot wounds.
According to the Police Force, preliminary investigations indicate that Williams was standing outside his home when a masked individual approached and shot him multiple times. The assailant fled the scene, leaving Williams in critical condition. Although bystanders attempted to transport him to the hospital, he was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Tyson, the District Medical Officer. The body was later taken to the Alexandra Hospital Morgue pending an autopsy.
This homicide marks the 23rd incident of the year, highlighting the ongoing issues with violent crime. In response, law enforcement agencies have intensified their efforts to address the problem.
In a recent national address, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew announced new measures, including increased stop-and-search operations and intensified patrolling of what he referred to as "hot spot areas."
“I am warning everyone that from today onwards, there will be constant vehicular checks and searches, including homes of individuals involved in criminal activities,” Dr. Drew stated.
Despite these measures, the Federation has experienced additional homicides. During a holiday stop-and-search operation, officers seized an illegal firearm and matching ammunition. Taj Frederick, 26, of Crab Hill, Sandy Point, was subsequently charged with possession of the firearm. The police discovered a 9 mm pistol and five rounds of ammunition in his vehicle, PB2754, leading to the detention of all three occupants. Frederick has accepted responsibility for the weapon.
In addition to addressing firearm-related incidents, the police force has also issued several tickets for various offenses, including driving with dark-tinted windows, and non-compliant identification marks.
