BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has expressed profound sadness following the tragic plane crash in Brazil that claimed the lives of 62 people on Friday.
Videos from São Paulo showed the plane spinning out of control before it plummeted from the skies and crashed into a residential area. Initial reports indicated that the crash resulted in the deaths of 60 people.
In a media statement, CARICOM expressed its sorrow: “We are deeply saddened by the crash of Voepass Linhas Aéreas Flight 2283 in Brazil on August 9, which resulted in the deaths of over 60 individuals.”
The statement continued: “We extend our deepest condolences to President Lula da Silva, the bereaved families, and the people of the Federative Republic of Brazil for their tragic loss. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the Governments of Portugal and Venezuela, who lost nationals in this devastating incident.”
The flight, en route from Cascavel to São Paulo, lost communication and ceased responding. The plane was captured on video spinning several times before crashing.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash, with officials having recovered the black box.
