Official Response from the Ministry of National Security regarding the National Disaster Coordinator

By: Ministry of National Security, Press Release

August 11th, 2024 -- The Ministry of National Security unequivocally condemns the false, misleading, and malicious allegations disseminated by the online publication known as Times Caribbean/St. Kitts-Nevis Times. These baseless claims falsely asserted that National Disaster Coordinator Mr. Abdias Samuel was either dismissed or placed on forced pre-retirement leave, only to be recalled by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew to manage NEMA operations for the impending storm.

It is clear that these fabrications were calculated to tarnish the reputations of Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Drew and the Ministry of National Security, while also attempting to create division between the National Disaster Coordinator and the Ministry at a time when solidarity is critical.

We have noted that the offending post and images have been removed from online platforms, but the damage caused by their widespread circulation remains. Despite their removal, the Ministry strongly condemns this reckless behaviour and the dissemination of misinformation, which serves only to mislead the public and sow discord.

    The truth is as follows:

    1. Mr. Abdias Samuel, after serving 24 years and 11 months in the public service, voluntarily retired from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

    2. Mr. Samuel has not been recalled to service. However, as a true patriot and dedicated public servant, he has graciously offered his expertise on a voluntary basis to support the Federation's disaster preparedness efforts. Rather than being subjected to unfounded rumors, Mr. Samuel deserves recognition for his continued commitment and service.

Mr. Samuel has publicly refuted the claims made by Times Caribbean / St. Kitts-Nevis Times. We urge all citizens to similarly denounce the lies and misinformation propagated by this so-called news outlet. As we brace for the approaching storm, let us stand together as a united force to protect lives and property.
