BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — TROPICAL Storm Ernesto is intensifying as it moves through the Leeward Islands, leading to deteriorating conditions across the region.
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported at midday that the storm has sustained winds of 50 miles per hour as it approaches southwest of St. Kitts and Nevis. Consequently, Hurricane Watches have been issued for the Virgin Islands, Vieques, and Culebra.
According to the NHC, Ernesto's center is located near 16.9°N and 62.6°W, with a west-northwest movement at 18 mph.
The National Emergency Management Agency has advised residents to take precautions, as the storm is expected to come closest to the Federation around 1:00 p.m.
Currently, heavy rain, thunder, and, in some areas, lightning are being reported as the storm approaches.
