By: SPBS, Press Release

New York, August 19, 2024 (SPBS) — As SPBS speeds to its annual Awards Gala on August 31st, it is proud to announce its 2024 college Scholarship winners. Every year qualified candidates from CEMSS and Verchilds High compete for scholarships. This year we are offering SIX scholarships. We are grateful to the key patrons and sponsors who continue to collaborate and to ensure sustainable growth with this educational endeavor.

Join with us in congratulating this versatile 2024 class:

2024 SPBS Verchilds High School Scholarship - Shaquana Jeffers, University of South Dakota

Shaquana Jeffers, a first-generation university student, is the recipient of the prestigious SPBS scholarship. Overcoming numerous challenges, she is determined to become a medical scientist. Inspired by her late father's legacy and supported by her mother, Shaquana is pursuing her academic goals at the University of South Dakota, aiming to make a significant impact in healthcare.

SPBS Ridley Guishard Memorial Scholarship Winner - Dr. Duriel Pemberton, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba

    1. Member of SPBS St Kitts Chapter since 2018, involved in fundraising and community support.

    2. Volunteered with the Ministry of Health, providing medical advice, lectures, and on-call services at events.

The aging global population requires more focus on geriatric care. My program in Geriatrics and Gerontology aims to address this need. Financial support will ease my financial strains, allowing me to focus on my studies and apply my knowledge to improve senior care in St Kitts and Nevis.

SPBS Undergraduate Scholarship Winner - Aushaun Brown, University of the Virgin Islands
Growing up in Sandy Point, my curiosity led me to pursue biology at the University of the Virgin Islands. The SPBS Undergraduate Scholarship will ease my financial burden, allowing me to focus on my studies and mentorship. I aim to contribute to medicinal science and continue supporting the SPBS mentorship program, inspiring others to pursue knowledge and community service.

SPBS Undergraduate Scholarship Winner - Jacinth Jasmine Violet Hunkins, Tarnkang University
As a Taiwan M.O.F.A scholarship recipient, I am pursuing a degree in Architecture at Tamkang University. My education journey, including top performance in Technical Drawing at CEMMS, has prepared me for this path. Financial support from SPBS will help me complete my studies and contribute to the development of St Kitts and Nevis through innovative architectural solutions.

SPBS Ridley Guishard Memorial Scholarship Winner - Denrick Jeffers, Taipei Medical University
The Covid-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of global health and health security. With a Ph.D. in this field, I aim to contribute to policy development and health system strengthening in St Kitts and Nevis. Denrick has a growing legacy in matters of public health as reflected in his journal article on “Asbestos Awareness among the residents of St. Kitts and Nevis: a cross -sectional study”, where he was the lead author. The Ridley Guishard Memorial Scholarship will alleviate financial stress, allowing me to focus on my studies and research, ultimately benefiting my community through improved health policies and emergency preparedness.

SPBS Sir Hugh and Claudette Lady Rawlins Scholarship Winner – Gariel Bowry, CUNY Lehman College

After reflecting on my journey, I realized that mental health counseling is not just about aiding those with mental health challenges but providing a nurturing environment for all to express and navigate their emotions. Inspired by the belief that "we all need just one person to see us," I aim to be that guiding presence for others. This conviction drives my pursuit of amaster’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, despite financial challenges. Growing up in the Caribbean, I witnessed the stigma around mental health, which fueled my passion for this field. My undergraduate experiences, including a clinical practicum at Mosaic and leadership roles, have deepened my understanding of psychological dynamics and societal challenges. Post-graduation, I aspire to raise mental health awareness and acquire practical knowledge to effect positive change within community-based organizations.

Sandy Point Benevolent Society, Inc. (SPBS) will celebrate these outstanding awardees at its Awards Banquet on Saturday, August 31st, 2024. The event will be held at the Villa Barone Manor, 737 Throgs Neck Expy, Bronx, NY 10465.

Mr. Crios Freeman, Principal of Freeman Law Services, will headline the event as its featured speaker.
