BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – The High Command of the Police Force recently convened a meeting with its rank and file to discuss the ongoing crime surge in the Federation and the consequent suspension of all police leave.
In recent months, the Federation has witnessed a significant rise in crime and violence, leading to a record 25 homicides this year. The public has increasingly questioned the police force’s response to this alarming trend.
In response to the crime wave, both the government and the police force have taken decisive action. All police leave has been suspended, and officers who were on vacation have been recalled to active duty.
"The discussion focused on the urgent need to enhance our operational capacity in response to the current challenges we face in maintaining public safety and order. The suspension of leave is a necessary measure to ensure that we have the full complement of our force available to address the crime surge effectively" the Police Force stated.
During the meeting, officers from various units voiced their concerns and outlined the challenges they face in the field. Commissioner of Police Mr. James Sutton assured the officers that the High Command is fully aware of these issues and is actively working to resolve them.
The Police Force emphasized that efforts are underway to provide the necessary support, resources, and accommodations to ensure that officers can perform their duties efficiently and safely.
As part of their strategy to combat the current crime wave, the police have implemented several measures, including stop-and-search operations that have led to the seizure of weapons, ammunition, and the ticketing of numerous traffic violators.
Additionally, the police have been executing warrants that have uncovered weapons and ammunition in various locations. They have also intensified patrols in identified hotspots to curb the violence.
