BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – WHAT was meant to be a joyous occasion for children and their families was marred by unruly behavior from several women on the opening night of Coney Island's stopover in the Federation.
The disturbance led to intervention by law enforcement, and the incident was widely shared on social media through photos and videos.
According to a police statement issued on Saturday (Sept. 14), the altercation occurred during a performance by the Sugar Band.
“Members of the security forces, who were present at the event, swiftly intervened and brought the situation under control,” the statement read.
The police emphasized that the incident did not affect the overall operations at Coney Island, noting that it was isolated to the band performance. “Such occurrences are not unusual, and the security forces were well-prepared to handle the situation efficiently,” the statement added.
The amusement park's opening is part of the 41st Independence Celebrations, which were announced by Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew at the Independence Youth Rally on Friday.
