BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE pivotal role played by the nation's five National Heroes continues to be recognized and celebrated, as Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew joined the National Heroes Day celebrations.
Sir Robert Bradshaw, Sir Caleb Azariah Paul Southwell, Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, Sir Simeon Daniel, and Sir Kennedy Simmonds have all been honored for their significant contributions to the development of St. Kitts and Nevis.
Reflecting on their legacies, Dr. Drew emphasized that their contributions were not merely acts of leadership, but expressions of deep love for their fellow citizens, along with a profound belief in the boundless potential of St. Kitts and Nevis.
“Sir Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, the father of independence, led with courage and vision, securing the rights and freedoms we cherish today. His unwavering commitment to justice and equity laid the foundation for our nation's sovereignty,” Dr. Drew remarked.
He continued: “Sir Joseph Nathaniel France, a champion of social justice and healthcare, dedicated his life to improving the well-being of our people. His efforts ensured that every citizen had access to essential services, allowing them to live with dignity and hope.”
Dr. Drew also praised Sir Simeon Daniel, the first Premier of Nevis, calling him “a beacon of leadership and camaraderie.” He noted that Daniel worked tirelessly to ensure that Nevisians' voices were heard and their needs met, fostering a spirit of cooperation that continues to define the Federation today.
“Sir Kennedy Alphonse Simmonds, our only living National Hero, guided our nation through its early years of independence with wisdom and integrity. His leadership ensured we remained steadfast in our pursuit of a better future for all,” Dr. Drew added.
The Prime Minister stressed that the legacies of the five heroes remind us that true leadership is “not about power or prestige, but about service, sacrifice, and a relentless commitment to the greater good.”
“They have set a high standard for us all, and it is our duty to honor their legacy by continuing the work they began,” he said. “But today, as we pay tribute to these giants of our history, we must also recognize the countless unsung heroes who walk among us. These are the teachers nurturing young minds, healthcare workers providing care and comfort, community leaders bringing people together, and everyday citizens who, through their actions, strengthen the fabric of our society.”
National Heroes Day is part of the broader Independence Day celebrations, recognizing the contributions of those who have played a vital role in the development of the country.
