BRONX, NEW YORK 25 SEPTEMBER, 2024 - The Sandy Point Benevolent Society, Inc. (S.P.B.S.) successfully hosted its 12th annual Awards Gala, on August 31, 2024 in the Bronx, NY. The event was held under the distinguished patronage of the Governor General of St. Kitts & Nevis, Her Excellency, Dame Marcella Liburd, GCMG, JP.
The ceremony, themed "Our Youth – Gifted for Greatness," celebrated awardees who are excelling and bringing pride to their families and country within their respective fields:
Jahzara Claxton: Distinguished Leader and a rising Star Award
Gloria Esdaille Robinson: Distinguished Alumnus and Culture Award
Jason Rogers: Distinguished Alumnus and Athletics Award
Kimarah Isaac: Distinguished Education Award
Michelle Amanda French-Nanton: Distinguished Alumnus and Sports Award.
All the honorees without question were deserving of their accolades, but it was Gloria Esdaille-Robinson’s tear-jerking story that brought the event to a one-minute pause. Gloria travelled to New York to accept her award despite her husband and stepmom’s passing. She shared that although he was not well, he wanted her to attend and she honored his wishes by standing in person with courage and God’s grace as a mark of respect for him. As president Stewart Williams summed it up, “Kudos to our awardees whose presence was so captivating and inspiring.”
Featured speaker and St. Kitts-Nevis based attorney, Mr. Crios R. Freeman, delivered an inspiring message. He emphasized the importance of community in shaping lives and reaping success through the various partnerships we cultivate.
The evening's event offered a well-balanced blend of informative content and entertainment. From the youthful energies of Azariah Charles, Kayin Benjamin, and Ilana “Illy” Warner to the sultry flavour of Ms. Abena Amory whose entertainment menu included her newest hits Toxic Love and Breezy. Mr. Troy D Southwell, the consummate host, worked the floor to ensure everyone was comfortable and having a great time.
The night ended with the Governor General’s surprise award presentation to SPBS’ President, Stewart Williams on behalf of the organization that he leads. Dame Marcella Liburd recognized the SPBS organization for decades of generosity to the Federation. President Williams responded that Dame Marcella’s confidence in SPBS will inspire its members to stay committed and on task.
Mrs. Elsa Revan, representing the St Kitts Chapter of SPBS, delivered the vote of thanks, expressing her gratitude to all attendees who traveled both from near and far to participate in the annual signature event. Notable mention was made of our UN Mission, US Ambassador’s Office, and the Monroe University for their participation and support. “Words are not enough to express SPBS’ appreciation to Her Excellency Dame Marcella Liburd, GCMG, JP, for travelling from St. Kitts and Nevis to be our Patron and to Mr. Crios Freeman, LLM, for also travelling from St. Kitts and Nevis to be our Featured Speaker,” she concluded.
A raffle drawing for exciting prizes brought the curtains down on the event.
