BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – After a fire yesterday (Oct. 23) damaged the St. Christopher Club Substation, the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) is actively working to restore power to affected residents in the Frigate Bay area.
Videos circulating on social media showed plumes of smoke rising from the substation as firefighters worked to contain the blaze.
In a statement this afternoon (Oct. 24), SKELEC assured customers that crews are working “around the clock to secure complete restoration as quickly and safely as possible”.
The company reported that, as of 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, approximately 70 percent of affected customers had their power restored. This included the St. Christopher Club Gardens and most of the St. Christopher Club Condominiums. However, the Rock Lobster Restaurant and one complex within the condominiums remain without power.
Today, crews continued efforts to repair and replace damaged cables to restore electricity to the remaining areas, including the restaurant. Metering teams were also on-site, installing 18 meters to facilitate the restoration of power to the final building still affected.
SKELEC noted that adverse weather, including heavy rain, could delay progress.
"While we understand how frustrating it may be for our customers to be without power for extended periods of time, we wish to assure the affected customers that our teams are working around the clock to ensure full restoration,” the company stated.
However, no specific timeline was provided for when power will be fully restored, raising concerns among residents, especially given the recent rise in temperatures.
