BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, November 5, 2024 (MMS-SKN) -- The Village at Brotherson Estate (a middle housing development project) is one of the developmental projects that were started by the Whitegate Development Corporation following closure of the sugar industry but which has not achieved its objectives. However, this is about to change.
“I became Chairman of the Board of Whitegate Development Corporation late 2022, and obviously, once I became Chairman I started to look at the different projects which Whitegate was involved in,” said Whitegate Development Corporation’s Chairman, Mr Lincoln Maynard. “Whitegate is an all-encompassing development corporation, it is not just about real estate development - it is about a number of other things.”
Mr Maynard, who made the remarks during an interview on Sunday November 3 at the Open Day held at The Village at Brotherson Estate in Newton Ground organised by the Whitegate Development Corporation, noted that the project was started a number of years ago, but it did not progress as expected as only two show houses had been built by the time he became the Chairman of the Board, and no tangible marketing had been done.
There were two Open Days, on Saturday and Sunday November 2-3, which were attended by among others, Senior Minister, and Minister of Minister of Foreign Affairs; International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs; Economic Development and Investment, and Area Parliamentary Representative, the Rt. Hon Denzil Douglas, Minister of Tourism et al. the Hon Marsha Henderson, Cabinet Secretary Dr Marcus Natta, businesspersons and scores of local people.
“One of the first things that we are going to be doing is not the last, but it is going to be in this category of projects,” said Mr Maynard. “I am getting a lot of endorsements for this project, both from the Government side and the private sector side. I am confident that this project, and I have told the CEO Mr Ellis Hazel, that I would like this project to be sold out within the next five years, and I verily believe that we can accomplish that.”
The Whitegate Development Corporation has developed a comprehensive five-year Strategic Plan with respect to their activities and agenda for the period 2024 to 2029, which was presented to the Cabinet and it was endorsed.
After he became the Chairman of the Board, he visited the project and was impressed by the scenery that included the island of St. Eustatius towards the sea, and Mt. Liamuiga towards the hillside.
He pointed out that they had put in the entire infrastructure, meaning that water and electricity were in, and the facilities for other network capability were also in. He added that all the roads were in and the lots had been surveyed, and there is a drawing where one can go and choose whichever lot and size they want.
Information provided by Mr Ellis Hazel, Whitegate’s CEO and Managing Director, there are 66 residential lots ranging in size between 6,000 square feet and 9,863 square feet, and three commercial lots ranging in size between 25,562 square feet and 31,787 square feet. Two of the commercial lots are reserved.
Two traditional houses of two bedrooms each were completed just around the time the Covid epidemic ended. Houses to be put up will be both traditional homes and modern homes of two and three bedrooms.
“The project is geared mostly to middle income,” said Mr Maynard. “It is not an affordable housing project - we must say that from upfront. This is a category which we are proud to introduce to locals, the young professionals of St. Kitts and Nevis, the young professionals of the Whitegate Development area - we go from Newton right through to Bellevue, including St. Paul’s and Saddlers.”
He confirmed that a lot of interest being shown, and in collaboration with the St. Kitts Investment Promotion Agency (SKIPA), the Whitegate Development Corporation will be reaching out very vigorously to members of the Diaspora, who want to come back to a place in St. Kitts which is going to suit their taste, as he believes that The Village at Brotherson Estate is the ideal spot for them.
Apart from Senior Minister, and Minister of Minister of Foreign Affairs; International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Consumer Affairs; Economic Development and Investment, and Area Parliamentary Representative, the Rt. Hon Denzil Douglas, who attended the two Open Days, also present was the Director of SKIPA, Mr Stanley Jacobs.
