BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – With external challenges impacting the disposable income of people worldwide, the Federation’s Ministry of Tourism is working to enhance local offerings and promote sustainability in the tourism sector, ensuring the local economy remains viable.
Tourism is one of the key pillars of the Federation’s economy, and any major global challenge can affect the entire country. With this in mind, tourism officials have been actively working to create a unique and appealing landscape for travelers, one that sets the Federation apart from other destinations in the region.
Minister of Tourism, Marsha Henderson, noted that in recent months, St. Kitts has “made remarkable strides, demonstrating our impressive ability to adapt to an ever-changing global landscape”. This adaptability is reflected in the rise in traveler arrivals at both the cruise port and the airport.
Speaking at a press conference at the Marriott Resort, Minister Henderson highlighted that despite ongoing challenges in the industry, “our beautiful island continues to attract travellers from all corners of the globe, drawn by our rich history, our diverse culture, and of course our warm hospitality”.
“This year has been particularly successful, marked by significant growth in the tourism sector fueled by our innovative programming and strategic partnerships,” she added.
Looking forward, the Ministry has outlined three overarching strategic goals:
1. Building a resilient and sustainable tourism industry,
2. Transforming St. Kitts into a year-round destination, and
3. Increasing the benefits of tourism for all communities.
“This year has been particularly successful, marked by significant growth in the tourism sector, fuelled by our innovative programming and strategic partnerships,” Henderson emphasized.
The Minister further highlighted the critical role tourism plays in the nation's economy and the livelihoods of its citizens. "With these goals in mind, we will continue to work diligently to ensure that the benefits of tourism are felt by all. Not by some, but by all! "
This year, the Federation has received several accolades for its tourism initiatives. According to Minister Henderson, St. Kitts was named "Green Destination of the Year" by Caribbean Journal and received the Megalion Gold Award for overall eco-friendly destinations, underscoring the Federation's dedication to sustainability. Additionally, St. Kitts was awarded the title of "2024 Caribbean's Leading Dive Destination" by the World Travel Awards.
“Reinforcing the integral role that this sector plays in our nation's economy and the livelihoods of our citizens. Sustainability and resilience continue to be critical growth pillars for this industry. Recognition by the international bodies for our work is a testament to this commitment to build an industry that remains viable for future generations.”” Minister Henderson said.
