CWI issues two-match suspension for Alzarri Joseph

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CRICKET West Indies (CWI) announced this evening (Nov. 7) that Senior Men’s team fast bowler Alzarri Joseph has been handed a two-match suspension following an on-field incident during last night’s (Nov. 6) game against England.

The incident occurred in the fourth over of England’s innings, when Joseph had a disagreement with Captain Shai Hope, resulting in Joseph walking off the field angrily. This action led to widespread public backlash across the region, with criticism from former players and regional media.

"Cricket West Indies (CWI) has imposed a two-match suspension on fast bowler Alzarri Joseph following an on-field incident during the 3rd CG United ODI at the Kensington Oval, Barbados.  As part of CWI’s ongoing commitment to upholding the highest levels of professionalism and integrity in the game, the incident, which involved conduct falling short of CWI’s standards of professionalism, was reviewed in consultation with the Senior Men's coaching staff, CWI said in a media statement.

West Indies white-ball coach Daren Sammy expressed disappointment at Joseph’s attitude during an interview with TalkSport UK, adding to the widespread criticism. He noted that it did not fit with the culture he was cultivating within the teams.

Commenting on the suspension, CWI Director of Cricket Miles Bascombe stated, "Alzarri's behavior did not align with the core values that Cricket West Indies upholds. Such conduct cannot be overlooked, and we have taken decisive action to ensure the gravity of the situation is fully acknowledged."

In a public apology, Joseph expressed regret over the incident, admitting, "I recognize that my passion got the best of me." He further explained, "I have personally apologized to Captain Shai Hope, my teammates and management. I also extend my sincerest apologies to the West Indies fans—I understand that even a brief lapse in judgment can have a far-reaching impact, and I deeply regret any disappointment caused."

CWI reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a culture of respect, integrity, and discipline both on and off the field.

Questions remain, however, as to whether this suspension will serve as a sufficient deterrent for Joseph and others who might consider similar behavior in the future.
