BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE discovery of high-caliber weapons by law enforcement agencies in the Federation continues to raise concern, as authorities seized another assault rifle along with matching ammunition in a recent operation.
In response to the country’s rising gun violence, the police force and other agencies have intensified search operations to counter the illegal flow of firearms. These efforts have led to significant successes in recent months.
On Tuesday, November 12, a joint search operation led by police uncovered a high-powered firearm and ammunition in Newtown, St. Kitts. Between approximately 12:00 p.m. and 12:30 p.m., officers from the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force (RSCNPF) Special Services Unit (SSU) and soldiers from the St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) searched an abandoned building as part of ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and reduce illegal firearms in the community.
During the search, authorities seized an AK-47 assault rifle, two magazines, and thirty-three rounds of 7.62mm ammunition. The contraband was taken into police custody, although no arrests have been made related to the discovery at this time.
The RSCNPF committed to continuing its investigations to bring those responsible to justice.
