BASSETERRE, St. Kitts—THE Caribbean Community (CARICOM) continues to strengthen its long-standing relationship with India, as both parties seek to enhance collaboration across critical sectors.
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with regional leaders on Wednesday (Nov. 20) during the India-CARICOM Summit in Guyana. The discussions focused on key areas of mutual interest, including energy, agriculture, ICT, healthcare, and pharmaceuticals.
CARICOM leaders reviewed the current trade and investment relationship between the bloc and India, noting recent progress in fostering mutual growth. They reaffirmed their commitment to advancing economic prosperity, addressing development challenges, and promoting shared global interests.
CARICOM Secretary-General Carla Barnett underscored the deep-rooted partnership between the Community and India, a relationship built through decades of diplomatic engagement.
India has provided support during critical moments—such as the provision of medical assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic and funding for the construction of the St. Peter’s Health Center in St. Kitts and Nevis.
“India's collaboration with CARICOM has led to substantial contributions in critical areas such as human resource development, health care, renewable energy, information and communications technology, and the blue economy. This includes support to operationalise some systems of the CARICOM Secretariat itself, including the provision of information technology, for which I express our sincere appreciation," she remarked.
Prime Minister Modi’s visit follows the recently concluded G20 Summit in Brazil, where key geopolitical issues were at the forefront. CARICOM is urging India to leverage its international influence to advocate for reforms in global financial systems, particularly to address the challenges faced by small states.
Guyana’s President, Irfaan Ali, commended Prime Minister Modi’s visionary leadership, which has bolstered India’s global standing. Referring to initiatives such as the Voice of the Global South, India’s G20 chairmanship, and its pivotal role in BRICS, Dr. Ali emphasized the impact of India’s advocacy for developing nations.
“These initiatives have elevated India's stature and placed the concerns of developing nations, including the small island-developing and low-lying coastal states of the Caribbean, firmly on the global agenda,” Dr. Ali stated.
Dickon Mitchell, CARICOM Chair and Prime Minister of Grenada, echoed these sentiments, lauding Modi’s dedication to sustainable development and international partnerships.
“His leadership has not only propelled India to new heights, but it has also opened new avenues for collaboration with our region," Mitchell said. "As both the current Chair of CARICOM and as Prime Minister of Grenada, I express on behalf of all of CARICOM's citizens our deep gratitude to Prime Minister Modi and the Government and great people of India for India's proactive and influential role in championing the ideals and aspirations of the Global South.”
