BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – TWO young men from Basseterre will soon appear before the City Magistrate’s Court after they were today (Dec. 19) charged for breaking into David Coury & Co. Ltd. Hardware Store and stealing a number of items.

SKNVibes learnt that Vance Thomas of Fort Thomas Road and Akeem Chumney of Central Street were charged with the offences of “Building break-in and Larceny”.

According to information reaching this media house, sometime after 3:00 a.m. on Thursday (Dec. 17) police responded to a break-in report at Coury’s Hardware on the Bay Road, Basseterre.

On arrival, the lawmen found that the building was broken into and the two young men were caught on the premises. The officers carried out a search on the premises but nothing was found. However, a further search within an adjoining yard realised the find of a large number of items that were removed from the hardware store, including many gallons of paint, paint brushes and some door locks (dead bolts).

It is understood that a third man was held but subsequently released.

Meanwhile, officers of the Anti-Narcotics Unit found a firearm and a quantity of ammunition in an abandoned building in Newtown.

According to a police press release, “On Friday 18th December 2009 at about 11:00 p.m., police officers of the Anti-Narcotics Unit (Drug Unit), acting on intelligence, searched the premises of an abandoned house at Mad House Alley, Newtown and found one (1) shotgun and four (4) rounds of 12 gauge ammunition.”

The release further stated that no one was held accountable for the find but investigations are ongoing.

This find brings the number of firearms removed from the streets of the Federation for 2009 to 33, equaling last year’s total. From 2006 to date, a total of 95 firearms were removed from the streets - 21 in 2007 and eight in 2006.
