BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AFTER securing a commanding five-wicket victory over Bangladesh on Sunday (Dec. 8) at Warner Park, the West Indies are determined to maintain their momentum and secure an unassailable lead in the three-match ODI series.
Winning the toss under clear blue skies, Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz opted to bat first on a surface that promised plenty for the batters. His side managed a total of 294/6 in their allotted 50 overs, a score slightly below par considering the true bounce and pace on offer.
Mehidy led by example with a well-crafted 74 off 113 balls, receiving valuable support from opener Tanzid Hasan (60) and Mahmudullah (50). Despite the contributions, the team struggled to capitalize fully on the favorable conditions.
All-rounder Romario Shepherd shone with the ball for the West Indies, claiming 3 for 51 in his 10-over spell, effectively disrupting Bangladesh’s momentum during the middle overs.
In response, West Indies captain Shai Hope anchored the chase with a steady 88 off 89 balls. However, it was Sherfane Rutherford’s explosive knock of 113 off just 80 deliveries—featuring seven sixes and eight fours—that sealed the game. His innings turned the tide, ensuring the hosts reached the target comfortably.
Reflecting on his performance, Rutherford credited the team’s planning and execution. “The captain and coaches stressed the importance of strong starts, which made things easier for the middle order. It was a complete team effort with both bat and ball,” he said.
Looking ahead to the second match, Rutherford emphasized the need for consistency: “Recovery is key. We’ll regroup, strategize, and aim to replicate our performance in the next game.”
Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz acknowledged his team’s shortcomings but remained optimistic. “Credit to Rutherford and Shai Hope—they played exceptionally well in the middle overs. Our failure to take wickets cost us,” he said. However, he noted positives in his team’s effort and reiterated the importance of learning and adapting, particularly for the younger players in the squad.
The teams will face off again on Tuesday at Warner Park, starting at 9:30 a.m. The visitors will be eager to bounce back and level the series, while the West Indies will aim to clinch it with another commanding performance.
