BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — MUCH of St. Kitts was left without power early last evening (Dec. 10), after the St. Kitts Electricity Company (SKELEC) initiated a precautionary shutdown following reports of a burning smell coming from its Needsmust Power Plant.
Around 6:00 p.m., the company carried out a controlled shutdown of the plant after its operators reported detecting a burning odor. The emergency shutdown protocol was immediately activated to prevent potential fires and avoid damage to the generation, transmission, and distribution infrastructure.
In a statement, the company explained that efforts to restore power were delayed by several challenges. However, the issue was eventually resolved, and operators gradually restored power to the affected areas later in the evening.
