BASSETERRE, St. Kitts- THE Hon. Sam Condor, who was acting as Prime Minister on Friday (Dec. 18), declared the St. Kitts/Nevis National Carnival officially opened under the theme “A celebration without End”.

The opening took place at the Independence Square on Friday evening and Condor said he was glad to see so many people came out, and that this year’s Carnival would be an exciting one. He also wished everyone a safe and joyous Carnival season.

Junior Liburd hosted the event while the Miss National Queen contestants introduced themselves to the audience. Additionally, Berriscia Byron, who will be representing St. Kitts in the Miss Digicel Haynes Smith Talented Teen Pageant, was also onstage and assured the audience that she would do her best in taking the crown.

Traditionally, Carnival is not officially declared open without the participation of folklore troupes. And for that reason clowns and masqueraders were in attendance and they invited a number of excited children excited to join them in their performance.

A teaser of costumes for various parade troupes were also displayed to the public, leaving some persons enthused about what is to come for the big day.

The 2009 events will include a number of pageants, calypso shows, J’Ouvert, boat rides, Old Year’s and New Year’s Balls, Parade Day of Troupes and Folklore as well as a Reggae Bash with Tanya Stephens out of Jamaica.

The exciting line up of activities will take place from December 18 to January 2.
