SKN Carnival Committee lays groundwork to boost arrival numbers

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts—Just over a week after the Federation concluded its annual Carnival celebrations, officials at the National Carnival Committee (NCC) are celebrating a significant increase in arrival numbers compared to the previous year.

In a social media post, the NCC reported that the Federation recorded 16,000 arrivals at RLB International Airport during the Christmas/Carnival season, an increase of more than 4,000 compared to the 11,900 arrivals in the previous year.

The committee attributed the surge to the growing popularity of Sugar Mas among carnival enthusiasts regionally and internationally, as well as returning nationals. According to the NCC, the Luxe Carnival troupe was particularly noteworthy, with 60% of its members coming from overseas, bolstering the Festival’s international appeal through its connections with other entities.

Speaking with SKNVibes News, National Carnival Director Clement O’Garro explained that the NCC collaborates closely with the St. Kitts Tourism Authority to ensure the Festival is marketed effectively and well in advance. As part of their strategy, they are encouraging stakeholders to release their products earlier to maximize promotion.

The NCC highlighted that the increase in passenger arrivals significantly benefits the local economy, noting that nearly 100% of the Carnival budget is reinvested locally.

"The economic impact of this influx is widespread, benefiting local businesses, creatives and service providers. From accommodations to food and entertainment, the boost in tourism during the carnival season fosters a dynamic economic environment that supports job creation and enhances the overall quality of life for our citizens,” the committee said in a statement.

Regional and international media are also showing increased interest in promoting Sugar Mas as a destination Carnival. O’Garro noted that media outlets from Trinidad, Antigua, St. Lucia, the United States, and the United Kingdom have expressed interest in interviews, describing Sugar Mas as the "newest, biggest, and best Carnival on the horizon."

Despite its growing popularity, there are no plans to extend or alter the Festival's calendar. Sugar Mas is set to kick off on December 15 and run through to January 2, 2026.
