Atiba Harris re-elected as SKNFA President, looks ahead to new mandate

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE election for the presidency of the St. Kitts and Nevis Football Association (SKNFA) concluded on yesterday (Jan. 12) with incumbent Atiba Harris securing re-election. Harris garnered 12 votes, defeating his challenger Jeffrey Hazel, who received eight votes.

Speaking after the election, Harris expressed gratitude to the member clubs for their support and reiterated his commitment to the development of football in the federation.

"Together, we'll continue to develop," Harris said. "Last term, we focused primarily on developing the infrastructure and we still have some work to do. Also, we would have been successful in qualifying for our first major tournament in the Gold Cup in 2023.’

Harris highlighted his priorities for the new four-year mandate, including advancing youth and women’s football and pushing for the national league to become semi-professional. He had campaigned on this initiative during his previous term but was unable to implement it.

"I know the worry about the players getting stipends and so forth, but we're working towards semi-professionalising our top flight and we're getting there,” he explained. “I still believe in the home-and-away method where clubs can continue to develop, build their capacity and also understand the day-to-day operation of football."

When asked about the achievements that may have influenced his re-election, Harris cited several key milestones.

“I think the increase in support. They've seen the work. They've seen the development of the technical centre. They've seen the major sponsorships coming on board with the way we're dealing with the players in terms of their players' health and support,,” he said.

Acknowledging ongoing challenges, Harris assured stakeholders that the SKNFA remains dedicated to addressing them and ensuring sustainable growth in football across St. Kitts and Nevis.
