BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A concrete dwelling structure was spared total devastation, thanks to civic-minded individuals and speedy response from the Fire Department.

SKNVibes understands that sometime about 10:40 on Sunday (Dec 20) morning, the Fire and Rescue Services was summoned to the Lime Kiln Housing Project residence of Tracy Hazel to put out a fire.

Fire Sub-Station Officer (FSSO) Felix Fredericks, in an interview with SKNVibes, explained that when the unit arrived on the scene, it met two civilians trying their best to quell the blaze.  He further explained that “we saw smoke coming from a bedroom on the south-eastern side at the front of the (concrete three-bedroom) building”.

The officer noted that the Fire and Rescue Services Unit quickly took control of the situation and was successful in extinguishing the fire.

This media house’s understands that the fire was contained to the room from which the smoke came and, as Fredericks explained, all items contained therein were destroyed. He said adjacent rooms “got smoke damage” but no further damage was done.

No one was injured as a result of the fire but information reaching this media house suggests that Hazel’s two daughters were at home when the fire started. They reportedly went to a neighbour’s house to contact the authorities.

While Fredericks indicated that they were unable to ascertain the cause of the fire, SKNVibes understands that the police may be making investigations to this end.

This incidence of fire brings to 243, the number of fires to have taken place in the Basseterre district for the year. That district stretches from Stone Fort Project in the west to Ottleys Ghaut in the east and also includes the Frigate Bay and Bird Rock areas.
