BASSETERRE, St. Kitts—FOLLOWING one of the deadliest vehicular accidents in the Federation's history, the police have formally laid charges against Jamie Herbert, a resident of Newtown.
The tragic accident, which occurred on December 11, 2024, involved a collision between two vehicles on the island's main road near Brimstone Hill. The incident resulted in the deaths of five individuals, prompting widespread public outcry over road safety.
In a statement issued on today (Jan. 19) police confirmed that Herbert is facing six charges connected to the incident. On Friday (Jan. 17), he was charged with five counts of Causing Death by Dangerous Driving and one count of Causing Injury by Wanton Driving. The charges were formally laid at the Sandy Point Police Station.
The tragedy has intensified concerns about road safety across the Federation. In the weeks following the accident, several other fatal incidents have occurred, claiming more lives and heightening calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws.
In response, the government and police force have ramped up efforts to ensure safer roadways. These measures include increased traffic enforcement and repeated appeals for drivers to exercise due care and consideration while on the road.
The most recent fatality on the Federation’s roadways is that of four-month-old Maikiri Edwards, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures.
