WASHINGTON, DC – DONALD Trump, now officially in office as President, has signed several Executive Orders, including one to withdraw the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO). This decision, announced on Monday (Jan. 20), has drawn widespread criticism from health experts who stress the critical role WHO plays in monitoring and addressing global health crises.
During his inauguration on Monday, President Trump issued the Executive Order citing the WHO’s "mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic that originated in Wuhan, China, and other global health emergencies" and emphasizing the organization's need for urgent reforms.
Trump and fellow Republicans have long criticized WHO, particularly since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the president signaling his intention to withdraw as early as 2020.
In response, WHO expressed regret at the U.S. decision. The organization emphasized its crucial role in safeguarding global health and security, including the health of Americans. A WHO spokesperson noted, "WHO addresses the root causes of disease, builds stronger health systems, and detects, prevents, and responds to health emergencies—even in the most dangerous and inaccessible regions."
The United States was a founding member of WHO in 1948 and has played a significant role in shaping the organization’s mission. WHO pointed out that, for over seven decades, its collaboration with the U.S. has saved countless lives and combated major health threats. Key achievements include eradicating smallpox and nearly eliminating polio, accomplishments made possible by American support and participation.
Since 2017, WHO has implemented its most extensive reforms to enhance accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact in member countries. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing improvement and expressed hope that the U.S. would reconsider its decision.
"We hope the United States will reconsider and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the USA and WHO, for the benefit of the health and well-being of millions of people around the globe," WHO said in a media statement.
