Belize Prime Minister sets General Elections for March 12

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Belize’s Prime Minister, John Briceño, has announced that general elections will be held on March 12, 2025.

In a national address on Tuesday (Feb. 11), Briceño confirmed that he had requested the dissolution of Parliament by the Governor General, with Nomination Day set for February 24.

"I encourage all Belizeans to vote. Election day is your chance, a chance to be cherished, where in free and fair elections, you choose the person and the party that can best represent your interests," Briceño stated.

Reflecting on his government’s tenure, the Prime Minister acknowledged the challenges they inherited.

"You gave our party and I the privilege of forming your government. Looking back, our country was virtually bankrupt at that time. Government was boring just to pay salaries. Tens of thousands were without jobs. Wages for public officers were frozen. The economy was shrinking and the times were desperate.

"Things have changed dramatically as we promised they would. Every day since you gave us that massive vote of confidence, my colleagues and I have worked to deliver on Planned Beliefs and to maintain your trust. The results are clear across our cities, towns and villages," he said.

Briceño stated that with this progress in mind, he believes it is the right time to seek a renewal of his party’s electoral mandate.

"After careful reflection and prayer, I have advised the Governor General to dissolve the National Assembly today and to officially set Wednesday, March 12, 2025, as the date for general elections. Nomination Day for candidates in all 31 constituencies will be February 24, 2025."

He reiterated his call for all Belizeans to participate in the democratic process. "When you consider crucial factors such as performance, qualifications, stability, character, and party readiness, I sincerely believe that our People’s United Party (PUP) and our 31 candidates are worthy of your vote.

"Let us all—candidates and citizens alike—ensure an election campaign focused on issues, one that respects each other's rights, and one that reaffirms Belize as a beacon of democracy. And with the guidance of our Creator, let us continue moving forward."
