BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – RENOVATION work at the Kim Collins Athletics Stadium is progressing steadily as the Public Works Department pushes to complete the project ahead of major scholastic meets in the coming weeks.
In a brief update on social media, Public Works Minister Konris Maynard expressed satisfaction with the progress, stating, "I am pleased with the progress made so far on the Kim Collins Athletic Stadium upgrades."
The stadium, previously in a state of disrepair, is undergoing significant upgrades, including the installation of new seating and a brand-new synthetic track. According to Maynard, these improvements represent a “significant investment in the future of sports in our Federation.”
Recent photos released by officials show that the asphalt has already been laid, and workers are now waiting for it to cure before proceeding with the installation of the synthetic track.
When contacted for a comment, President of the St. Kitts and Nevis Athletics (SKNA) Association, Delwayne Delaney, declined to speak on the specifics of the project but expressed optimism that the work would be completed on time.
SKNVibes Sports understands that experts in track installation are expected to arrive in the Federation soon to begin their work. However, progress will depend on favorable weather conditions to ensure a smooth installation process.
If the upgrades are not completed in time, the Athletics Association may consider relocating major meets to Nevis or holding events on grass surfaces across the island. However, the CARIFTA trials are still expected to take place on a rubberized surface.
Meanwhile, Minister Maynard remains optimistic about the impact of these renovations, stating, “I look forward to seeing how these improvements will elevate athletics, inspire our athletes, and enhance the overall sporting experience in St. Kitts & Nevis.”
