Febuary 27th, 2025 -- March is Literacy Month and SKI Academy is ready. In preparation, we had a grand reopening of our library on 5th February, just in time for World Read Aloud Day, SKI's own Grade 4 student and regional author, Coryn Clarke, read to her peers from her series: The Chronicles of Coryn. She read Adventures in St. Kitts & Nevis along with Traditional Carnival Characters of Trinidad and Tobago. The students thoroughly enjoyed her stories and were blown away to know that you can be a published author at such a young age!
Our annual read-a-thon kicked off today, Thursday, 27th February, with the theme: 'Once Upon A Bedtime Story'. The SKI team greeted the students and parents at arrival in the midst of a slumber party. A mock bedroom was set up and everyone was in their pajamas reading books! The main launch event, our Reading Slumber Party will take place after school. Parents and students of SKI Academy are invited to read together on our lawn in their pajamas. Local author, Heidi Fagerberg from Caribbean Reads will be our guest author and reader for the evening, whisking listeners away into a world of imagination. Each class worked together to create a brand new bedtime story that Miss Heidi will read to those in attendance. In addition, children can exchange books at our book exchange to gather new titles to read throughout the week as they rediscover their love of reading.
The SKI Library now features local and regional titles and authors like Chee Chee in Paradise, The Brimstone Hill Adventure series, The Masquerade Dance by Carol Ottley-Mitchell; Tata and The Big Bull by Juleus Ghunta; Sweet Victory, Belly Full Soup, and Oliver and Friends by Heidi Fagerberg; Chronicles of Coryn series by Coryn Clarke; Trixy The Monkey that Ate Nevis by Jo-Anne Mason; Sugar is all: Caribbean short stories and poems from St. Kitts and Nevis by Anette Walwyn Michael, and so much more. While the goal is to foster a love of reading in general, it is also to nurture a greater appreciation for the local talent found right here in St. Kitts and Nevis and the Caribbean.
Our library also launched a new section, the Tina Beck Book Nook. Former SKI teacher Ms. Beck left funds before moving back to the United States for the school to do something fun with. In addition to her generous donation, the SKI Student Council also contributed to the effort, and 185 new books were added to the SKI Collection.
Our annual read-a-thon not only inspires and encourages children to read, it is also our biggest fundraiser of the year. Funds raised help keep our library current and also allow us to buy educational resources that go directly into the classroom. During the read-a-thon, students will participate in Curl Up With a Good Book Day, Character Dress Up Day, a scavenger hunt, Book Buddy-Up day where older students read to younger students, and guest author day in which middle and high school students read their own written work to the younger students. It will be a fun week of reading and learning at SKI.
Reading is so beneficial and rewarding no matter your age, and we want to encourage all of St. Kitts to read along with us in celebration of World Literacy Month.

Homeroom Teacher, Grade 5
