BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – IN light of the upcoming Christmas and Carnival celebrations, the St. Kitts-Nevis Traffic Department has issued new arrangements for the safety and security of motorists.

On the nights of the Ms. St. Kitts Pageant, the Calypso Senior Monarch Finals and the Miss Caribbean Talented Teen Show (December 28, 29 and 30 respectively), motorists will be disallowed from parking on the eastern side of Victoria Road between the Basseterre High School (BHS) and the Old Boys’ School.

General parking will be at the BHS playfield, but sponsors and other officials with the relevant parking passes will have use of a specially designated place within the school. Only motorists with the appropriate pass will be permitted to park in Warner Park.

A release from the Department assures that security would be provided for vehicles parked in BHS until a half hour after the shows have concluded.

In relation to the traffic flow, persons may drive northwards only along Victoria Road and eastwards only along Lozack Road. All restrictions will be effective from 6:00 p.m.

Saturday (Dec. 26) is J’Ouvert, and while the public is encouraged to enjoy itself to the fullest, persons should take note of the following restrictions.

“Vendors are asked to refrain from selling drinks in glass bottles and revellers are asked not to go into bands with glass bottles or any other weapon. The wearing of camouflage clothing or other military-type uniforms by members of the public will not be permitted,” said Department Head Inspector Cromwell Henry. “Persons travelling in or approaching Basseterre may be subjected to random searches by members of the security forces.”

Henry asked for full cooperation by the public, warning that members of the security forces would be strictly enforcing the policy. He outlined the route bands would be taking and advised motorists to avoid parking or driving along those places.
“The bands will leave their various mass camps and proceed along the following route - Fort Street, east or west along Cayon Street, West Independence Square, Church Street, Lower College Street and the Bay Road.”

He added that no jamming would be permitted in front of Police Headquarters, and that all festivities would end at midday as bands would not be allowed to jam to their respective camps having left the prescribed route.
