Track and Field Stadium work progressing despite delays

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MINISTER of Sports Samal Duggins has announced that upgrade work at the Kim Collins Athletics Track is progressing well, despite delays caused by inclement weather.

Over the past several weeks, the Federation has experienced heavy rainfall and strong winds, which have hampered the final stages of construction.

Minister Duggins provided an update on the project's progress via his social media platform, stating:

“The redevelopment of the Kim Collins Stadium is progressing well, in spite of delays caused by persistent rainfall in recent months. While the weather has been beneficial for agriculture, it has impacted construction timelines.”

He highlighted that significant upgrades have already been completed, including extensive renovations to the main stadium. These improvements include new seating, roof enhancements, upgraded bathroom facilities, and a fresh coat of paint.

The track is in its final stage, with only the last layer remaining to be laid. “The stadium has been advancing, generally quite well,” the minister noted.

However, concerns are growing over whether the resurfacing of the track will be completed in time for upcoming major meets.

During a press conference today (March 6), when asked about the project’s timeline and potential alternatives, Minister Duggins stated that discussions are ongoing with key stakeholders, including the Athletics Association, the Ministry of Sports, and the Ministry of Education, to determine the best course of action.

"We are still hoping to have them at the stadium this year. But again, we don’t control the rain, and we are working along with the team from Ready Paul… Right now we are at the mercy of God,” he explained.

Despite the challenges, the minister reassured the public that the government remains committed to delivering a top-tier facility that meets the needs of athletes and the broader sporting community.
