GEORGETOWN, Guyana – LAW enforcement officials in Guyana have launched an investigation following the discovery of a large quantity of cocaine aboard a Guyana-registered vessel off the coast of West Africa.

According to Guyana’s Ministry of Home Affairs, French authorities requested and received permission from Georgetown to board the vessel, where they uncovered 6.3 tonnes of cocaine.

In a statement, the ministry reported that the search took place on Saturday (Mar.15) on the Solo, a Guyana-flagged vessel operating in the region. The authorities removed the cocaine, which was packaged in bales.

Six crew members were detained, including one Colombian, one Dominican, and four Guyanese nationals. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.

Guyana has long been identified as a transshipment point for illicit drugs in the Western Hemisphere. Recently, media reports from Georgetown highlighted another drug seizure involving a vessel intercepted in Trinidad and Tobago.
