Time for decisive action to combat traffic fatalities – Top Cop

By: Staff Reporter, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – AS the nation mourns yet another young life lost in a traffic accident, Police Commissioner James Sutton is calling for immediate and decisive action to prevent further tragedies.

Over the weekend, police confirmed the death of 15-year-old Kaliquan Woodley of Sandy Point, who died in an accident on March 27 on the island’s main road in White Gate.

According to a police statement, the accident occurred between 8:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Woodley was traveling on a motor scooter from Dieppe Bay to St. Paul’s when he collided with a vehicle. He then fell onto the road and was struck by a passing car.

In a public statement, Commissioner Sutton expressed his condolences to Woodley’s family, noting that the young man’s father is a police officer. The tragedy comes less than a week after 18-year-old Shanice Harvey of Dieppe Bay also lost her life in a traffic accident in the same area.

"On behalf of the Royal St Christopher and Nevis Police Force, I extend my heartfelt condolences to his grieving family as well as to the families of those who have lost loved ones in road accidents this year. No words can truly ease the pain of such loss but rest assured that our thoughts and most fervent prayers are with you during this difficult time," Sutton stated.

He urged the nation to unite in supporting the bereaved families and to take meaningful action to prevent further loss of life.

Woodley’s death brings the number of traffic-related fatalities this year to four—already half of the total recorded in 2024. This comes on the heels of the country’s deadliest accident last December, when eight people perished.

"Four fatal accidents since the start of this year is far too many. Just a few short months ago in December 2024, we all bore witness to eight persons dying as a result of traffic accidents. These losses should serve as a heavy sobering reminder of the need for all road users to exercise caution, patience and responsibility," Sutton emphasized.

He urged motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians to obey traffic laws, adhere to speed limits, and remain vigilant while navigating the roads.

"Pay attention. Reckless and negligent driving not only endangers your own life but also the lives of passengers and other road users. Our officers will continue to enforce the law and to do their best to ensure the safety of everyone on our roads but enforcement alone is not enough. Each of us has a duty to make responsible choices behind the wheel. There is no point in leaving home or work and driving at literal breakneck speeds to get to your desired destination," Sutton added.
