J’Ouvert Morning…From the mouths of the people

By: Cherisse M. Sutton-Jeffers, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THOUSANDS of people, in a kaleidoscope of colours, were everywhere in Basseterre yesterday morning (Dec. 26) as the bands, HI-Fi and sound systems boomed their way through the streets.

Many people came out for J’Ouvert in shorts, some even looking like underwear, as they displayed their own style of outfits, hair styles and creativity.

As J’Ouvert got closer to the end, SKNVibes spoke with a number of persons to find out what they experienced.

A middle-aged man name Dave said, “I don’t jam but every year I like to come out and watch the people. J’Ouvert brings a sort of togetherness and that is what I like, even though there are a few fools who spoil it for us.”

Jason, who could hardly speak when asked the question, said, “You don’t even have to ask how it was for me. Just by looking at me I am sure you can tell I came to enjoy myself and that is exactly what I did.”

“I mash up bad. Those were the words of Natalie, a young lady who added that she was out and ready to get on bad since 5:00 a.m.

Coleen said she jammed behind Small Axe Band all morning even though they didn’t have a huge crowd, but the less people the more space it was for her and she “muscled up” and fully enjoyed herself.

“I don’t want J’Ouvert to end, I could rock it up all day with Sugar Band,” said Damie, who looked like he was ready to pass out at any minute.

Mellissa, who was covered in paint from head to toe and limping, said, “Lord me foot a hurt me, ah can’t walk, a want sleep two days.”

Another young lady name Kim said she mashed downtown then left for home, freshened up and returned to look on.

“I am soaking wet, tired, sleepy, hungry and drunk, but I ain’t going home till the last band done jam,” said a young man who wants only to be referred to as KB.

Tyrone, on the other hand, said, “I did not come to jam, I just come look on and bang some drinks.”

“Sun hot but as Nu Vibes say, ‘Don’t Study Dat.’ I jamming still and when the bands finish I going by the DJ to wuk up till I can’t wuk up no more,” said Tammy, who added that she had to be at work for 3:00 p.m.

Wow! So for all those who didn’t attend the J’Ouvert Morning Jam, it sounds like some people did the jamming for you and themselves. By the time the morning was over some people were seen on the sidewalks, in the streets and in Independence Square resting their tired bodies. Some were even fast asleep in Independence Square
