As the world focuses on the future of global public health management, Taiwan?a major contributor to global health? is seeking to participate in World Health Organization (WHO), as well as the World Health Assembly (WHA) as an observer.
WHO is the most important organization addressing global public health challenges. Yet due to political prejudice, it has been hindering global prevention, preparedness, and response to health emergencies by excluding Taiwan.
World-leading medical and healthcare services
During COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan demonstrated its commitment to public health as well as the reliability of its epidemic prevention system. Taiwan has also accumulated a great deal of experience providing international medical assistance through donating medical supplies and offering training to the medical personnel of partner countries. A recent visit by a medical assistance team from Taipei Veterans General Hospital to St. Kitts and Nevis is another reflection of Taiwan’s dedication to global health.
Such efforts showcase Taiwan’s world-class public health system, medical capabilities, and its willingness to contribute internationally. Taiwan’s participation in the WHO will only allow it to even better fulfill its obligations to public health and promote global well-being.
Unmasking the PRC’s disinformation campaign and manipulation in the WHO
From a legal perspective, People’s Republic of China (PRC) claims that Taiwan should be excluded from the global health institution because WHA
Resolution 25.1 draws on UN General Assembly (UNGA) Resolution 2758. However, neither of these resolutions mention Taiwan, nor do they authorize the PRC to represent Taiwan. Hence, these resolutions do not address the issue of Taiwan’s representation in the UN systems or its specialized organizations. Only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent its people in the WHO and other international organizations.
China’s malicious misuse and distortion of UNGA Resolution 2758 is yet another attempt at political suppression of Taiwan through information manipulation and cognitive warfare. In reality, these resolutions cannot be used to oppose Taiwan’s participation in the WHO.
Call for a strong and healthy WHO
Thanks to the dedicated, combined effort of Taiwan’s government and people, along with staunch support from its allies and friends, the international community has come to a greater understanding of the necessity of Taiwan’s inclusion in the WHO.
Taiwan will continue to press for participating in the up-coming 78th WHA as an observer as well as in WHO meetings. Such a development would ensure that global health decisions are inclusive of all, including the 23.5 million people of Taiwan.
A strong and healthy WHO is crucial for the health of the entire global population. Disease knows no borders. The participation and input of all nations are essential for empowering global health.
