BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — A widespread power outage disrupted daily life across Spain, Portugal, and parts of France on Monday (Apr. 28) affecting airports, transit systems, and international sporting events.
The blackout, which occurred in the afternoon, led to significant service interruptions and prompted concern among residents and officials throughout the affected regions and beyond.
Spanish authorities described the outage as an “exceptional and extraordinary” event, with full restoration of services expected to take between six and ten hours, according to CNN.
While the precise cause of the disruption has not been confirmed, the UK Telegraph reported that officials have pointed to severe weather conditions as a likely factor.
The outage has already had notable consequences, including the cancellation of play for the remainder of the day at the Madrid Masters 1000 tennis tournament.
In a statement, Spain’s national grid operator, Red Eléctrica, confirmed that “the peninsular electricity system suffered a power outage this morning in mainland Spain and Portugal.” The company said it is coordinating efforts to fully restore electricity as quickly as possible.
Further updates are expected as officials continue to investigate the cause and manage recovery efforts.
