The UWI Regional Headquarters, Jamaica, West Indies. Friday, May 2, 2025 -- For the first time in history, women are at the forefront of Trinidad and Tobago's political landscape. The recent general election on April 28 marked a significant turning point, with women now occupying the three most influential political positions in the twin-island Republic.

The Honourable Kamla Persad-Bissessar, S.C. has returned as Prime Minister for the second time. Meanwhile, veteran member of the People's National Movement (PNM) political party, The Honourable Pennelope Beckles-Robinson has been nominated by the party's General Council and will soon be sworn in as the country's Opposition Leader.

Her Excellency Christine Kangaloo O.R.T.T., President of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, will officiate the swearing-in ceremonies for both leaders. This unprecedented event marks the first time in Trinidad and Tobago’s history that three women will simultaneously hold the top constitutional offices. Her Excellency, President Kangaloo, also a former Senate President, has served as the Country’s President since 2023.

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) proudly recognises the achievements of these three distinguished alumnae, all of whom studied law at the Cave Hill Campus.

In response to this historic milestone, Vice-Chancellor Beckles, a historian, emphasised the institution's commitment to gender equality and leadership development. He stated, "We take immense pride in this remarkable gender representation at the pinnacle of Trinidad and Tobago's political landscape, exemplified by these outstanding women leaders who have walked the halls of The UWI. Their success is a testament to our commitment to empowering women and nurturing leadership talent from every corner of our community. We extend our warmest congratulations to each of them, with wishes for a successful tenure to the new Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition,” he concluded.
