BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ON May 12, St. Kitts and Nevis joined the global community in celebrating International Nurses Day, recognizing the invaluable contributions of nurses across the healthcare sector.

The spotlight on nurses has intensified in recent years, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing attention to the critical care they provide and prompting greater appreciation from governments and medical professionals alike.

Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting healthcare workers through fair compensation, continued training opportunities, mental health resources, and safe working conditions.

Referencing the government's Sustainable Island State Agenda, Dr. Drew emphasized that human development remains a top priority, in order to acheive the long-term vision of making St. Kitts and Nevis a model of sustainability, security, and social equity.

The government also plans to reintroduce the Associate Degree in Nursing at the Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College. This program will complement the existing Bachelor of Science in Nursing and expand opportunities for aspiring healthcare professionals.

In a formal address, Dr. Drew honored nurses with deep appreciation: "Today, May 12th, we pause with deep reverence and gratitude to honour a most noble calling, the sacred vocation of nursing. Across our twin-island Federation and throughout the world, we celebrate International Nurses Day 2025 under the theme: ‘Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies.’ It is a powerful message, a timely reminder, that caring for those who care for us is not only a moral imperative, but a strategic one.”

He continued, "Our nurses are not merely workers in uniforms, they are the silent sentinels of healing, the steady hands in moments of crisis, and the warm voices that comfort families in their most vulnerable hours. They are the soul of our healthcare system, present at life’s first breath, and often, its final whisper. And in every moment in between, they serve with skill, compassion, and unwavering dignity.”

Dr Drew noted that this year’s theme reminds that the well-being of nurses rdmain inextricably linked to the health of society and the strength of our economy.
