TT to receive 21 deportees from the US

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts — THE Government of Trinidad and Tobago is working with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to facilitate the return of 21 nationals who are being deported from the United States.

This move is part of U.S. President Donald Trump’s continued efforts to remove individuals deemed to be in the country illegally or in violation of immigration laws. Since his return to office in January, President Trump and his administration have intensified deportation efforts targeting both undocumented and documented immigrants, drawing criticism and causing confusion among immigrant communities and advocacy groups.

In a media statement issued on Saturday (May 17), Trinidad and Tobago's Ministry of National Security confirmed it had received a formal request from ICE regarding the repatriation of the 21 nationals currently in custody. The group includes 17 men and 4 women, who are scheduled to return on May 23 with support from the T&T government.

Due to the size of the group, a chartered flight is being arranged to facilitate the deportations more efficiently.

“The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is reviewing the manifest and itinerary provided and is currently in communication with IC to ensure that all protocols, documentation, logistical requirements are met in accordance with local and international immigration standards,” the Ministry stated.

Caribbean nationals continue to be held in ICE custody awaiting deportation, and the U.S. administration has increased pressure on regional and international governments to repatriate their citizens.

Earlier this year, several Caribbean governments raised objections to the manner in which their nationals were being deported. In response, the U.S. warned of possible visa restrictions and cancellations for countries that fail to cooperate.
