ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – TOURISM and hospitality leaders from across the Caribbean have gathered in Antigua and Barbuda this week for the 43rd Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association (CHTA) Marketplace, the region’s premier tourism networking event.
The four-day event, held at the American University of Antigua from May 19–22, brings together nearly 800 delegates for an estimated 9,000 business meetings. Discussions are expected to focus on key challenges in the hotel sector, including the impact of potential U.S. tariffs, the threat of recession, and the need to strengthen regional connectivity and resilience.
The opening ceremony on Monday evening showcased the rich culture and cuisine of Antigua and Barbuda, drawing praise from CHTA President Sanovnik Destang. He commended the host nation for demonstrating the Caribbean’s capacity to stage large-scale international events.
As the political and economic landscape shifts, building stronger linkages—particularly with the creative industries—is essential, Destang noted.
Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez highlighted Antigua and Barbuda’s growing reputation as a world-class host. Following the successful Caribbean Investment Summit, the country is also set to host the OAS General Assembly later this year and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 2025.
“...little Antigua has proven that we can host regional and international events at the highest standard," said Fernandez.
The CHTA Marketplace is widely seen as a key driver of business development and collaboration within the Caribbean tourism industry.
