GEORGETOWN, Guyana – PRESIDENT Dr. Irfaan Ali announced on Sunday evening (May 25) that Guyana will hold General and Regional Elections on September 1, 2025.
The announcement came during his Independence Day address at a flag-raising ceremony, where he noted that an official proclamation will soon be issued to formally initiate the electoral process.
The upcoming elections will take place amid a period of significant economic expansion fueled by the country's offshore oil discoveries. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected that Guyana will experience double-digit growth this year, making it the fastest-growing economy in the world.
The September vote will come just over five years after the country's contentious 2020 elections, which were marred by allegations of electoral fraud. Several individuals were later charged in connection with efforts to manipulate the outcome.
In a surprising development, controversial businessman Azruddin Mohammed has announced his intention to run for the presidency. Mohammed, along with his father and several of their businesses, was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for alleged corruption and tax evasion amounting to over $50 million. A former government permanent secretary was also implicated in the investigation.
